Plantlife Events

These Plantlife courses are online and are intended for landowners, woodland owners, woodlands managers, site managers and advisors based in the northwest or southwest of England.

Tree Marking - Transformation to Continuous Cover Forestry

This 3 day course is run by Ted Wilson and focuses on early-stage transformation of conifer plantations to continuous cover forestry.

It is designed to provide an introduction to the theory of CCF and the practical steps involved in starting the transformation of a planted stand.

This course will be eligible for the Forestry Commission - Forestry and Arboriculture Training Fund which will open again this summer for applications.

Planning a forest: Site assessment & Tree species selection

This introductory-level module in partnership with Tree Story aims to provide an overview of site conditions relevant for forestry and their implications for tree species choice. Delegates should have a basic understanding of forestry.

Topics covered include climate conditions, an introduction to forest soils, vegetation as fertility indicator, tree species’ requirements on site conditions and an introduction to Forest Development Types as the longterm target of forest management.

The module includes indoor sessions as well as extensive site visits and practical exercises.

Learning outcomes- Delegates can recognise principal soil types and explain their implications for soil fertility and soil moisture. They are able to relate soil fertility to ground vegetation on site, access and interpret information on climatic conditions and choose site-adapted tree species and forest types. Delegates will also be able to access and use FR’s Ecological Site Classification system ESC.

Pre-Requisite knowledge: Basic understanding of forestry practice and/or undergraduate degree or equivalent

Funding- This course will be eligible for the Forestry Commission - Forestry and Arboriculture Training Fund which will open again this summer for applications. Applications are made by individuals for specific courses such as this one. If you are successful in your application, we can refund your payment (deposit or full cost).

Terms and conditions- Cumbria Woodlands retains the right not to run this course if in sufficient places are booked to justify running the course.

Deer Management Courses

DSC 1 and or DSC 2

Partner Organisation- Greenlee Deer

Cost- £1000 per course

When- On demand

About- Either DSC1 (Deer Stalking Certificate) or DSC2 courses can be run 1 to 1 on demand.

The trainer for all courses is Jon Snowdon who is a professional deer manager, a BASC approved trainer and assessor for this DMQ qualification.

Location- Haltwhistle – North Cumbria
